In the middle of the Cabo de Gata Nature Park sits this enormous Cortijo Los Malenos. With over 70,000 m2 of land surrounding the cortijo, space is not an issue making this the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the fresh air. The cortijo is centuries old, imbued with the ambience of the past of which the thick walls bear silent witness. This is a great place to go for walks, retreat with a gripping book to one of the many patios or to claim your spot by the swimming pool. The pool is slightly higher located so from here you can enjoy the lovely view of the surrounding area and its wonderful natural beauty.
And as space is not an issue here, this is also reflected in your room. All 12 rooms are spacious and have their own private terrace. Moreover, all the rooms are on the ground floor so from your terrace you can walk straight into the grounds to go for a good walk.
The rooms exude the typical cortijo atmosphere, the decor is simple with rustic furniture. No frills and spills but that is not what this place is all about anyway.
Saying that, everything is perfectly clean and nicely maintained.
We were also pleasantly surprised at the good quality breakfast. There is plenty of choice, everything is fresh and prepared using plenty of the cortijo's own produce. A nice touch is that you get to score your breakfast, take your breakfast tray up to your own terrace or any of the patios around where you can enjoy it to your heart's content. Add to that the stunning views of the surrounding area and we can think of experiences which are much more unpleasant. Evening meals are also served and, once again, many of the ingredients used have been home-grown. A nice dinner by candle light beneath a starry sky. I can't wait to go back there soon!
The children will also have a really good time here with plenty of space to romp about in. Their imagination will run wild in this landscape, the perfect setting to play cowboys and Indians. There is also a swimming pool and on top of this, you are only 4 kilometres away from the seaside!
And if you feel like a little culture during your stay, you can enjoy watching films and there are flamenco or jazz music evenings.
Cabo de Gata is (still) mostly undiscovered, however, we are totally mad about this part of southern Spain. And staying at the Cortijo Los Malenos only fuels our enthusiasm for this area.

Cons:
• No air conditioning in the rooms, but there is a fan. Although it was very hot outside during our stay, we experienced no problems with excessive heat inside. This is, of course, also due to the fact that the old thick walls mostly keep out the heat.

Pros:
• Beautiful old cortijo, its original character has been successfully maintained. You get to experience the real ¨cortijo ambience¨
• Very peaceful environment, the perfect place to unwind
• Plentyy of space
• Still close enough for a trip to the seaside

Een leuk vissersdorpje met mooi zandstrand in de Cabo de Gata.

Actief&Natuur
Wandelen langs de kust langs de kliffen van Agua Amarga richting Las Negras (11 km), en je komt langs vele leuke strandjes en baaitjes.
Een rondrit door het Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata, een fascinerend natuurgebied gevormd door vulkaanuitbarstingen en gestolde lava langs de kust. Je vindt er duinen, zoutpannen, kliffen en veel baaien.
Naast wandelen is duiken populair.

Familie
Een bezoekje aan Tabernas (80km, 1h) aan Mini Hollywood is een aanrader! Hier zijn westerns opgenomen en wordt zo nu en dan nog steeds gebruikt als filmset. Het is nu echter meer in gebruik als attractiepark inclusief een dierentuin, de bezoekers worden vermaakt door sheriffs, bankovervallers en stuntende cowbows, en natuurlijk door de dansende girls in de saloon.

Stranden
Genoeg keuze! Bijvoorbeeld Playa de Monsul en Playa de Genoveses in de buurt van San José.
Een rondrit door de Alpujarras, en de verschillende leuke dorpjes in de Alpujarras bezoeken, zoals Lanjaron, Orgiva, Capileira, Pitres, , Cadiar, Yegen, en Válor.
Granada is een culturele stad, genoeg dingen te doen! Bezoek vooral het Alhambra en Generalife.

De volgende dorpjes/steden in de omgeving zijn een bezoekje waard:
Nijar (31km; 36min):
Dit witte dorp ligt aan de voet van de Sierra de Alhamilla, ten oosten van Almería. Het oude centrum is kenmerkend voor Andalusië met smalle straatjes en balkonnetjes vol bloemen. Dit dorp is bekend om zijn kleurige aardewerk en zijn jarapas (met de hand geweven kleden en dekens).

Almería (68km; 1h):
Het fort aan de kust (Alcazaba) herinnert aan de gouden eeuw van Almería als belangrijke havenstad voor het kalifaat van Córdoba. Vanaf het Alcazaba heb je een prachtig uitzicht over de stad. Binnen de muren vind je heerlijke tuinen.
Verdere bezienswaardigheden zijn de kathedraal (doordat deze vaak geplunderd werd door Berberse piraten lijkt het meer op een fort dan op en kerk), in de wijk La Almedina. Dit is een oude Moorse wijk met smalle straatjes, leuke pleintjes en witgekalkte grotwoningen. In deze wijk vind je ook de Templo San Juan (restanten van de belangrijkste moskee van Almería). Daarnaast nog bezienswaardigheden als de Plaza Vieja (plein omringd door arcaden met het gemeentehuis), de toegangspoort Puerta de Purchena (toegangspoort in de stadsmuur).
Het park ´Parque de Nicolas´ vormt de grens tussen de oude stad en de haven.Verder is een bezoekje aan de zigeuner- en visserswijk La Chanca een mogelijkheid, waar nog steeds gezinnen in grotwoningen leven.
